7 Days Until International Talk Like a Pirate Day!!
Today's Inspirational Pirate Quote
In this issue:
While Cap'n Slappy is off enjoying the piratey highlights of Alaska, Ol' Chumbucket is foregoing the sultry excitement of the Great White North to celebrate on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where the family moved a year ago.
Sept. 19 is going to be a cruise ship day in Frederiksted, which means about 3,000 tourists will be hitting the island. And Ol' Chumbucket will be down at Polly's at the Pier, a coffeeshop/restaurant/alehouse on the waterfront, owned by our friends Steve and Seth. I'll be selling and signing books, singing a bit and generally getting in the way.
That evening Mad Sally and I will attend a major pirate party at Cane Bay on the north shore. Sponsored by our friend Captain Killy, These gatherings run from 9 p.m. to 9 the following morning. There'll be LOUD pirate music, plenty of liquid refreshment, knife and ax throwing, cannonball tossing, and more. Captain Killy is very excited – he recently acquired a cannon that fires tennis balls and he says he's figured out how to set them alight as they leave the barrel! Not sure how good an idea that is, but we'll see. From a safe distance.
And of course both Slappy and I will be taking the phone interviews that pour in from around the world on the holiday. We'll try to keep you abreast of who's calling when so you can tune in if yer of a mind. But it gets a little hectic, so we'll have to see.
Here's a bunch of holiday related activities we've been told about in the last few weeks. There's LOTS more online at our party page –
Beginning with an important one sponsored by our friends Jamaica Rose and Captain Michael MacLeod Lampe of No Quarter Given Magazine. (And speaking of which, I just realized I need to subscribe!)
-- No Quarter Given will hold its 15th Anniversary West Coast Party! All of us here at Talk Like a Pirate Day doff our tricorns and say, congratulations on 15 fine freebooter years to our friends Christine and Michael Lampe! California pirate jam band "There Be Pirates!" will perform, launching their new CD. The event is FREE, and begins at 9 p.m. on the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
The event is part of Pyrate Daze, which will be celebrated along the Long Beach waterfront Sept. 18 and 19. Give a look – you'll doubtless see our pal Sea Wolf hawking, among other finery, the official 2009 Talk Like a Prate Day shirt – a T-shirt you'll be proud to wear every day of the year!
-- OH-NO comics got a jump on things by launching its third anual Pirate Month for the entire month of September. Comics will update every Monday and be pirate themed. Comics can be found at http://www.ohnocomics.com.
-- The Arizona Corsairs are holding Talk Like a Pirate Day celebration at The Shout House in Westgate Plaza , Glendale, AZ. The party is slated from 6 p.m. to midnight. More information at www.azcorsair.com.
-- A homeschool group in Sand Spring, OK, will meet at a state park dressed in filibuster finery andtalking pirate talk. The day will include a treasure hunt, sword fights, prizes for best costumes and grub.
-- In the port town of Lyttleton, New Zealand, (near Christchurch) a 300-person pirate party will be held in a bar called The Wunderbar. Here's a link to the event on Facebook
-- The Sunken Bones 3rd Annual Buccaneer Bash will be held in Denver Sept. 19 from 6 p.m. "until the kick us out!" Yarr!! Full information can be found at their Web site: http://www.sunkenbones.com/bash
-- The Minnesota Renaissance Festival, which os going on this month, will be invaded by pirates on TLAPDay. Go to
for information about how to join in.
-- The Kingsmill Stockport Bakers in the UK will embark on a sponsored walk across the region to raise money for the Cure Parkinson's Trust. Roughly 60 to 80 bakers will put down their loaves and don their pirate hats to raise the much-needed funds for the charity. The walk starts at 9.30 a.m. at Allied Bakeries in Stockport.
-- We've also received several e-mails from people who are getting married on Sept. 19, and forever after will be celebrating their anniversary on Talk Like a Pirate day. Since weddings tend, for the most part, to be by invite only, we'll not be passing on specifics, but we would remind all the happy couple of our favorite pirate phrase, one which is particularly apropos on the day of a wedding – "Prepare to be Boarded!"
Just wanted to add a note about the Talk Like a Pirate Day videos we have posted on youtube. You can find the videos by searching for videos by "officialwench" or subject - Talk Like a Prate Day."
People want to know when a new video will be posted. Well, it'll be a little while. Slappy and I live 4,000 miles apart, so that makes it tricky. But Mad Sally – the Official Lusty Pirate Wench, my official wife and the Pirate Guys videographer – has come up with a script that we can do, but it's been delayed because our camera is down. Turns out it's unrealistic to expect the battery to last six years. We've got one on order, but for complicated reasons I don't understand they can't send it to the Virgin Islands. So I'm having it sent to Slappy who will turn it around and ship it to me and en we'll be in business.
So expect a new Pirate Guys video sometime in October. Unless someone gets some video of us in Alaska or here on St, Croix on the holiday, in which case we'll post it as quickly as we can.
The holiday is hard upon us, so you'll be getting more updates from us soon.
