73 Days Until Talk Like a Pirate Day!
In this issue:
Just a few days left until the finale of our “Design the International Talk Like a Pirate Day Official 2010 T-Shirt Contest.” And the deadline is even closer now that I’ve typed out that whole name.
It’s not too late, but you’ll have to hurry. The deadline is midnight Saturday, July 10. You can read the rules at http://talklikeapirate.com/contest2010.html. We’ve been posting the entries that have come in at our Facebook fan page, and you’ll see there are some dandies. The competition is fierce! Are you fierce enough to join in the fray?
The winning design will be posted as a T-shirt and other stuff on our Café Press online store, and the winner will receive a shirt with his or her design on it. And of course the pride that comes from being able to say, “Cap’n Slappy picked me!”
The winner will be announced July 17, simultaneously (or as near as we can do simultaneously) on our website, Facebook fan page, Cap'n Slappy's Twitter feed and in the Poopdeck.
So check out the rules, then it’s not too late to stir your creative juices and enter some art work!
Talk Like a Pirate Day is fast approaching, only 73 days until the holiday - 71 until the start of International Talk like a Pirate Day Weekend. (The holiday falls on a Sunday again this year, so just like last time we’re takin’ the whole weekend! Arrr!)
What are you planning? Any festivals, parties, pub crawls, pillaging or other events? Let us know!! Write of your plans to Jezebel the Webwench and she’ll post ‘em on our site.
Congratulations to our friends at the Northern California Pirate Festival. It’s not official yet, but they’ve taken the title of world’s largest assemblage of costumed pirates, and done so in style.
This is a recent point of contention in the pirate world, with the title getting swapped back and forth. First the Brixham (England) Pirate Festival captured the crown in 2009 from a German pirate festival. That fall, during the TLAPDay weekend, the Portland (OR) Pirate Festival beat their number. This spring Brixham mounted a challenge and took the title back, unofficially coming in at 1,722 pirates, topping Portland by 32. Portland is getting set to try to take the record back this fall.
However, they’ve got a new mark to shoot for. The Northern California Pirate Festival (celebrated on the waterfront in Vallejo) has set the bar awfully high. They unofficially (pending confirmation by the good folks at Guinness) of 2,646! Even if they miscounted by 10 percent, they've got the record with plenty to spare!
Our friends in Portland will have their work cut out for them, and that’s a fact! As it happens, Cap’n Slappy himself is planning to be there, live and in person. So that’s one. How many more will be there?
And that’s all I’ve got today, but with the holiday approaching I’ll be writing again soon, and more regularly.
